  • Janice Nicholas Senior Office Administrator

    Janice Nicholas

    Senior Office Administrator

    Janice has worked at CarterDawes since 2007 in an administrative capacity.

    On a day to day basis, her role involves organising client appointments, preparing client reviews and generally keeping the office running smoothly.

    Janice got married in 2016 in Las Vegas and now lives in Exmouth with her husband, two stepchildren and two cats! In her spare time, she enjoys keep fit, socialising, reading and holidays.

  • Mike Dawes Managing Director

    Mike Dawes

    Managing Director

    Since the age of twenty, Mike’s entire career has been in financial services. He started with the Prudential and then moved to Barclays Bank before establishing CarterDawes in 2002.

    Mike is an experienced financial adviser who has held several management roles, as well as specialising in compliance. His main goal at CarterDawes is to continue to grow the number of Associates. He holds the CII Diploma in Financial Planning and also has qualifications in Mortgage Advice and Practice, Equity Release and Long Term Care Planning.

    Driven by a belief that we have a duty to give back as much to society as society has given to us, Mike ensures that CarterDawes sets aside up to 1% of their turnover to support local charities and community projects.

    He takes great pride in his three grown up children. One of his other great passions is long distance running, a sport he came to late in life. He has run the London Marathon as well as the Great North Run. Property renovation is another new found interest.

  • Simon Carter Chartered Fellow

    Chartered Fellow

    From a schoolboy ambition to ‘work in a Bank’, Simon’s whole career has been related to financial services. His very first job was with Lloyds, before moving to Barclays in 1989. He qualified as an Adviser in 1999 and in 2002, joined forces with Mike Dawes to set up an honest, ethical and truly independent advice company – CarterDawes was born!

    Steadily growing the business over the last few years in terms of the number of advisers and the level of funds under management, has been an exciting and rewarding time.

    Simon’s particular passion is in the building and management of investment plans. He enjoys working with clients with complex financial needs, helping them to invest their funds, plan their retirements and insure their futures. He also specialises in working with other professionals and trustees.

    In July 2020 Simon achieved Fellowship status with the Personal Finance Society, the highest level of financial planning qualification.

    Simon is married to Jude, a music teacher, and life is very busy with their two teenage daughters. When not at work, he enjoys golf (playing), rugby (watching) and guitar (playing badly)!

  • Louise Griffin Chartered Financial Planner

    Louise’s entire career has been in financial services, having started with NatWest in 1989, dealing with Trusts and Estates. She qualified as an adviser in 2007 and began her career in financial advice as part of a Network.

    Louise joined Carter Dawes in 2013 to continue her work as an Independent Financial Adviser in Devon, providing financial planning advice across the whole spectrum including investment, savings, protection, IHT planning, retirement, and later life planning. She enjoys helping her clients achieve their goals and giving them peace of mind.

    Louise acquired Chartered Status several years ago and continues to relish learning, through study or day to day looking after clients and the scenarios and changes in circumstances that life can throw at us.

    Louise is married with two grown up children and is Devon born and bred. She is keen on all types of sport and is a member of an Exmouth ladies running club and an avid cold-water swimmer. She is also a Director of the Cranford Sports Club in Exmouth in a voluntary capacity. When not in a Board meeting, she can be found in the gym or swimming pool!

    Louise is also a keen cook, Exeter Chiefs Rugby supporter, and enjoys socialising with friends and family as often as time permits.

    Stephen started his career in financial services at the age of twenty-one with The Pearl Assurance. After fourteen years there, he joined Barclay’s Life where he worked in the areas of personal and corporate finance.

    As an Independent Financial Advisor with CarterDawes, he now helps individuals with their financial planning, focusing on investments, pensions, life assurance and trusts. He enjoys building up long term relationships with his clients and is proud of the fact that some of them have been with him for over thirty years.

    Stephen is married with two boys, is a mad rugby fan and has played both rugby and cricket for over thirty years.

  • Chris Vicary Independent Financial Adviser

    Chris’s whole career has been in the banking and financial services industry. He enjoys the fact that his role now enables him to offer fully independent financial advice.

    He holds the CII Level 4 Diploma in Financial Planning as well as certificates in Long Term Care Advice and Practice and Mortgage Advice and Practice.

    Chris’s work is focused mainly on investments, retirement planning, Inheritance Tax planning and protection. He tends to work with professionals and the retired but anyone that needs advice. He is very well regarded in the Exe Valley and beyond and the majority of his new clients are via referrals.

    He has been married to Maria for twenty-seven years and has two sons, Ben and Jack. Ben is following in Chris’s footsteps and Jack is currently completing his final year of a carpentry apprenticeship. During the first lockdown Boris the Cockapoo arrived who has been a wonderful addition. As a family, they enjoy the outdoor life, particularly walking, skiing and trips in the family campervan. Chris is also a keen rugby fan, supporting Jack at Exeter Saracens and also following the Exeter Chiefs.

    Mark is an Independent Financial Adviser with over thirty years’ experience in the industry. He joined CarterDawes in 2014 and enjoys being able to provide truly independent advice and building up long term client relationships with his clients.

    He holds a CII Diploma in Financial Planning. What Mark finds particularly rewarding about his role is discovering what really matters to a client so that he can help them to achieve their financial goals.

    Mark has lived in the Honiton area since 2001 with his wife, Gill, and they are the proud parents of four children. He is involved with the local Community Church, is a keen skier and, when time permits, is a mad Exeter Chiefs rugby fan.

    Servicing Manager & Adviser Support

    Mary joined CarterDawes with Mark Donne-Davis in 2015, following thirty-five years with Lloyds Bank. She worked with Mark for the last five of those years in Lloyds Private Banking section.

    She provides administrative support to the advisers and Janice, the office manager.

    Now their children have left home, Mary and her husband have taken up beekeeping. She also enjoys walking with their dog, bell ringing, gardening and helping to run the East Devon Riding for the Disabled Association Group.

    Operations Officer and Independent Financial Adviser

    James was an aircraft engineer with the Royal Navy for ten years before deciding to change career path and train as a Financial Adviser.

    James enjoys both the advice and compliance aspects of his role at CarterDawes.

    He holds a Foundation degree in Aeronautical Engineering and also has the CMI Level 5 Certificate Management and Leadership. He is currently working towards becoming a Chartered Financial Planner.

    He has four young children, Alfred, Henry, Aida and Eleanora and lives with his wife in Honiton. He enjoys golfing and football but spends most of his time either tidying up after the aforementioned four children or studying.

    I started my career in Financial Services in 1989 with Pearl Assurance, before setting up a Financial Services arm in Webbers Estate Agents in 1995. After a few years I went into business in partnership with a fellow financial adviser, operating out of South Molton from 2002 to 2015, before moving to Town & Country Insurance. I stayed as an employee for 7 years before deciding it was time for one last challenge!!

    As an Independent Financial Adviser with CarterDawes, I now help individuals and businesses with their financial planning, focusing on pensions, investments, private medical insurance and protection. I also work very closely with a local estate planning practitioner and mortgage adviser, which allows me to offer a holistic service.

    My ethos is all about service and building up lifelong relationships.

    I have lived with my partner Hayley for 16 years and between us we have 2 daughters, 2 sons and 3 grandchildren. I am a lifelong Liverpool fan and enjoy travel, country walks, visiting historic sites and also work very closely with the Amusement (fairs & circuses) Industry.

    Kristian has spent nearly 10 years within various roles in the financial services, including being a Bank Manager, Mortgage Adviser and Independent Financial Adviser. For him, one of the most important aspects of being a financial adviser is getting to spend time with clients, getting to know them and understanding their aspirations throughout the various life stages.

    His main areas of focus are Investment Planning, Retirement Planning and Protecting what’s most important to clients. Kristian enjoys building portfolios to match the client’s individual needs and believes that everyone should have advice that’s tailored specifically to them.

    Kristian is married to Rochelle and has a young son called Elijah who certainly keeps him busy when not at work. He enjoys watching and playing most sports but mainly Football, Rugby and Cycling. He also takes part in charity events to help raise money for an orphanage project in Zambia and has so far ran the Liverpool marathon and cycled from Somerset to Lisbon, Portugal.

    Jonathan has been in Financial Services for over 20 years, working initially for larger corporate companies and then as an Independent Financial Adviser.

    Whilst he offers holistic financial advice, he specialises in retirement planning, advising on the most suitable investments and estate planning. He focuses on having a clear understanding of his clients and their specific objectives.

    Jonathan is married with two children, and in his spare time enjoys spending time with his family.

  • Max Cornish Chartered Financial Planner

    Max has advised clients for 25 years and carried out a wide range of financial planning during that time.

    The bulk of his work for his clients involves arranging suitable investments, helping build funds for and during their retirement and careful estate planning to reduce their Inheritance Tax liabilities.

    He has been Chartered since 2013 and has a strong technical background but, of equal importance, believes that effective planning can only be carried out with a deep understanding of his clients’ priorities and objectives.

    Aside from keeping himself fit, he enjoys golf, socialising and watching all the sports his body no longer lets him play!

  • Joshua Ware Trainee Financial Adviser

    Joshua is a Trainee Adviser who has recently joined Carter Dawes after spending the past 10 years working in sales & management roles for multinational & nationwide companies which are ideal foundation for his new career.

    On a day to day basis, he is involved with research and administration & is currently studying for his Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning and is keen to become a fully qualified Independent Financial Adviser.

    His attention to detail, good listening skills and great empathy are symbols of his appreciation for clients.

    In his spare time when Joshua is not spending time with his family & friends, he enjoys running & is sport mad. Joshua is particularly keen on Rugby were he also holds coaching badges.
    Joshua holds a BA (Hons) Degree in Business Administration from the University of Plymouth.

  • Sarah Heal Paraplanner

    Sarah has extensive experience as a Paraplanner providing support to Independent Financial Advisers and is competent in looking after clients with an empathetic and knowledgeable approach. She is fully qualified Independent Financial Adviser and holds the CII Level 4 Regulated Diploma. Sarah is working towards her Chartered Status with CII. Day to day Sarah works exclusively with Simon and enhances the service and proposition offered to his clients.

    In her spare time, Sarah is a mother to a young son called Alfred and is often busy with what all of that brings. Sarah is enthusiastic about martial arts and has trained and competed around the country in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu – her son also joins her and they enjoy time together training!

    Jessica began her career in the financial services industry at TSB Bank in 2017. She holds the Certificate in Financial Planning and Administration, and the Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning. Jessica is studying to become a Chartered Financial Planner.

    Jessica takes pride in building good, professional, client relationships and supporting other advisers of CarterDawes in research and other administrative tasks.

    Jessica lives in Honiton and in her spare time, she enjoys socialising and keeping active by regularly training at the gym and running.

    Office Manager

    I joined CarterDawes in May 2023. Prior to this I have had a varied career path starting in higher education moving into tourism & editorial, I even spent a short time in aviation before settling in Financial Services.

    I have a varied role where no two days are the same, which I love. I can be assisting the advisers with new business & client administration one day and the organising events and updating social media the next.

    In my spare time I enjoy spending time with family and friends socialising, being outdoors and holidays abroad.

    Chris Edgar

    Chartered Fellow

    Chris qualified originally as a stockbroker with Edward Jones and has been in the Financial Services industry for twelve years.
    In a former life, he used to be a farmer in Zimbabwe.

    Chris holds many professional qualifications in financial planning and achieved one of his life’s ambitions by attaining his Fellowship with the Chartered Institute of Insurance (CII) in 2014. Among other things, this enables him to use the letters FPFS after his name! In a somewhat different subject, he also has a BEng (Hons) in Metallurgy from the University of Surrey.

    Most of his work is focused in the investments and pensions arena, helping clients achieve their financial goals by saving for retirement, generating income once retired and keeping taxes as low as possible.

    Chris is married to Janine, with two children, Jonty and Eloise. He declares he has no real time for interests as he and his wife run a taxi service after work, ferrying their offspring to and from clubs!

    Having started his career with the Prudential, Peter has worked in the Financial Services sector for seventeen years. After qualifying, he moved on to work for Barclays Bank for ten years. He then worked for Edward Jones, before joining CarterDawes in 2010.

    Peter holds Diploma status and enjoys meeting the varying needs of clients in the ever changing financial environment. Whether it be making the most of savings in the current low interest rate climate, helping people plan for retirement, or supporting clients at a sensitive time during a divorce, he always aims to meet their needs and provide a personal touch.

    Away from work, Peter enjoys running and has done several half marathons. He lives in Ipswich with his wife and they have two children and two grandchildren, who also keep him fit!

    Gary has worked in finance all of his working life and has been with CarterDawes since 2010. Before that, he was with Edward Jones for over four years, working as a stockbroker and Financial Adviser.

    Gary is of the firm belief that everyone should have access to sound financial advice and enjoys helping his clients with their long term financial planning. He finds it a privilege to be involved in their lives and to help them achieve their goals.

    Gary is married with 2 grown up children, he has managed to talk his eldest daughter into becoming an IFA with CarterDawes and his wife now provides his office management support.

    He recently moved from Ipswich to Norwich to be closer to the family but still works out of the Princes Street, Ipswich office; whilst moving from Suffolk to Norfolk can be an serious issue for some, as a native North Londoner, Gary says his bigger concern would be travelling south of the Thames

    She specialises in advising on investments and helping individuals who are looking to achieve potentially greater returns on their savings. Edwina enjoys developing long term relationships with her clients to help them to achieve their financial objectives.

    Operating on an independent basis now, Edwina has welcomed the opportunity to work for her clients rather than large organisations and to be able to offer a full range of funds and financial solutions.

    Edwina is married with two grown up children, Georgina and Oliver. She is a keen golfer and a member of Ipswich Golf Club. She also enjoys cycling, gardening and walking her dog.

    ’Claire worked for Barclays Bank for 24 years before joining CarterDawes 11 years ago where she works for Peter Dawes as an Administrator.

    She holds a variety of financial qualifications including certificates in Mortgage Advice and Practice, General Financial Services, SAGE 50 and manual book -keeping.

    Mum to a grown up daughter, time away from work is spent meeting up with friends and family. Claire enjoys trying new ways to keep fit, long walks in the local countryside, baking, gardening and if time permits, curling up to watch a film or read a good book.

    Natalie works in the administration team in the Ipswich office, keeping all the advisers organised!

    She is married with two young daughters so much of her time is spent enjoying all that that brings. Away from the office, she likes taking part in combat classes, baking, walking, gardening and pursuing outdoor activities – although not all at the same time!

    After finishing university, Jessica started working with her father Gary Moody at CarterDawes. Whilst working with him she took her exams to become a fully qualified independent financial adviser.

    Having passed all her exams at the start of the first lockdown Jessica has had to adapt to working from home and her new role. Jess’ main focus is on investment and pension planning, but she does offer the whole spectrum of independent advice.

    Jessica enjoys playing games and going to the theatre and stand-up comedy.

    Jessica is a big believer that the best thing you can do with your money is to enjoy it, and spending it is a great way to achieve this. However, for those long-term goals or achieving those bigger goals she’s there to help.

    Sam is a Chartered Financial Adviser whose primary focus is on helping his clients plan for their retirement and set up long term asset management strategies. He uses a no-nonsense approach to keep financial advice simple and his client focused on what is important to them.

    His long-term focus as an Adviser is on building quality relationships with a select number of clients and helping them achieve peace of mind over their money and financial matters.

    Outside of work he is fairly typical, enjoying sports, socialising and spending time with his family. He spent time working in kitchens whilst at University and maintains an interest in cooking, with simple Italian dishes his speciality.
